BAXTER - Gladys M. Pett Umbarger, 81, a resident of Colonial Manor in Baxter for the past year, died Monday morning, Nov. 27, at the Iowa Lutheran Medical Center in Des Moines of complications of surgery.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reese Chapel in Newton.

The Rev. Frederick Kramer, retired Episcoplian clergyman, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2.p.m. today. Visitation with the family wil be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.

Survivors are two sons, George of Newton and Jack of Lambs Grove; two daughters, Patsy Jess of rural Baxter and Colleen Wyatt of Birnamwood, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchilren; and a sister, Alice Endsley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Oscar, in 1982, a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.

The daughter of Herbert and Myrtle Knapp Pett, she was born March 19, 1908 in Waterloo.

She was married to Oscar Umbarger May 16, 1925 in Newton.

She moved to Newton in 1925. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1989
