HAROLD SMITH

COLFAX, IA. - Harold "Babe" Smith, 58, of Colfax died of a heart ailment Sunday at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Howard Street Christian Church. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery.

Mr. Smith lived in Colfax all his life. He had been Jasper County deputy sheriff for three years and retired in 1987 after 11 years as Colfax police chief. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette; four sons, Mark, Randy, Stephen and Tracy, three brothers, William, Pete and Paul, and two sisters, Doris McVay and Arlene Taylor, all of Colfax; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call after noon today at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

COLFAX – Harold Arthur “Babe” Smith, 58, of Colfax, retired Colfax Chief of Police, died Saturday, Feb. 2, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will e held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax.

The Rev. John McKinstry, pastor of the church, will conduct services and burial will be in Colfax Cemetery.

Friends may call after noon Tuesday at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax and family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Howard Street Christian Church may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Jeanne; four sons, Mark, Randy, Steven and Tracy, all of Colfax; and six grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers, William, Pete and Paul, all of Colfax; and two sisters, Doris McVay and Arlene Taylor, both of Colfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served as a Jasper County Deputy Sheriff from 1973 until 1976 and Colfax chief of Police from 1976 to 1987.

He also owned and operated a trucking firm.

Mr. Smith, an Air Force pilot, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He served as a boxing judge for the Iowa Golden Gloves from 1957 through 1987.

The son of William Steven and Jessie Faye Teed Smith, he was born Feb. 24, 1932 in Colfax.

He was married to Jeanette Arlt April 24, 1958 in Denver, Colo. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Mon 4 Feb 1991.
