Wednesday, October 14, 1896A Wife Taken
On Sunday last, a burial occurred that was unusually sad -- the interment of a mother who leaves five children and a sorrowing husband. For some months past, Mrs. Wm. Crossland, at her home in Baxter, has been afflicted with dropsy and the result has been forseen some time. Her death occurred on Friday night and the funeral was held in Baxter Saturday morning and the body was brought to the Newton cemetery and interred. The deceased maiden name was Bessie Grimes and she grew to womanhood in the neighborhood of Prairie City and was married to Wm. Crossland in the spring of 1884. They lived in Newton until about six years ago when they moved to Baxter. Five children were born to them, all of whom are living, the eldest being about ten years old and the youngest a babe of about two years. Mr. Crossland’s sister, who has been staying with him since his wifes illness began will remain with him and keep the family united. The bereaved husband and motherless children have the sympathy of all.
