Obituary - On Feb. 1st, death removed from this life Joseph W. Blackwood, one of the pioneers of this county, at a ripe old age, the immediate cause being bronchial trouble.

He was born in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, on May 3rd, 1812, and removed to Harrison Co., Ohio, in early manhood, later moved to Athens Co., where he was married on May 2nd, 1839, to Mary Shaner; soon after united with the M. E. Church, and has lived a consistent member for more than fifty years.

He leaves an aged widow and a large family of children and grandchildren, with many friends to mourn his loss. His living children were all present at the funeral which was held at Mt. Zion Church the 4th inst. and was well attended showing the esteem his neighbors held for him. The services were conducted by Rev. Phillips, text Psalms 17, 15. The pall bearers were selected from his old acquaintances of over a quarter of a century.

Deceased came to Jasper County Iowa with his family in 1854 and located on the farm (then raw prairie), where he died. He lived a long and useful life and by honest, judicious management has accumulated a considerable amount of this world's goods and was conceded to be a careful and discrete man in his business transactions.

The relatives of the deceased tender their sincere thanks to their many friends for their kindness during their bereavement.

The funeral services were held at Mt. Zion last Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. D. Phillips preached from Psalm xvi. 15, and he spoke highly of our departed brother. The house could not contain the multitude of people who had come to show their respect to the beloved friend and brother gone to his great and eternal reward. May God bless the widow and all the family.
