Obituary: Theodore S. Matheny

METZ - Funeral services for Theodore S. Matheny, 82, of Rt. 2, Newton, a resident of the Metz community since 1933, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Reese Chapel in Newton.

The Rev. Harold Den Hartog, pastor of the Metz Community Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services Tuesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He died Thursday evening at the Skiff Medical Center.

Survivors are two brothers, Fred of Newton, and Normie of Springtown, Tex., who was raised by the Matheny's following the death of his mother in 1932.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Thelma, in 1983, two infant daughters, a sister, and a brother, Darrell who also was raised by the Matheny's following his mother's death.

Mr. Matheny was a member of the Metz Community Church, a 50-year member of the Sugar Grove Grange and a member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau.

Mr. Matheny, who had worked at the Maytag Co., as a young man, began farming full time in the early 1930s and continued until retiring in 1970.

The son of Elijah S. and Louisa Matheny, he was born May 10, 1903 in Gowrie. He was married to Thelma Engle Aug 24, 1929 in Des Moines.

He resided south of Newton on the Skunk River bottom before moving to the Metz community. - Newton Daily News, March 1986
