AT REST. – One of the old settlers of Jasper county, Israel I. Dodge, finished his allotted number of years, last Tuesday, at the old home, five miles north of Newton, aged 89 years.

Mr. Dodge was born and grew to maturity in New York. In his early manhood the lumber business engaged his attention, but when he moved to Iowa, in 1858, he bought a farm near Wittemburg, and has lived on and cultivated it ever since. Living so near the Congregational church at Wittemburg, that became naturally his church home, where he did his part toward carrying on the church work with interest and pleasure.

He served in the war, being a member of Capt. Miller’s company, 13th Iow Infantry. Leaves five children, viz.: Joel Dodge, Mrs. Bessie D. Harrah, Mrs. Ida D. Cutler, all of Newton; Mrs. John Mott, of Postville, Iowa; Mrs. Emma D. Fair, Maxwell, Iowa.

Mr. Dodge had been failing in strength for several years and the end came gradually, slowly, peacefully, in ripe old age.

The funeral was held in the Wittemburg church, Thursday, and the body laid in the adjoining cemetery. A large number of friends were in attendance to show their sympathy and friendship. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1894
