KELLOGG -- Steven E. "Steve" Witte, 52, of Kellogg died Friday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with the Rev. Ernie Braida officiating. Burial will be at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the church, where the family will be present from 7:30 to 9 p.m. A vigil service will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the church. Memorials will be accepted to Kellogg Fire Department or for a scholarship in his name to be set up with Dollars for Scholars.

The son of Edwin W. Witte and Eleanor Hill, he was born May 16, 1953, in Grinnell. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1971. He obtained a coaching certificate and coached seventh grade girls basketball and volleyball and seventh grade boys basketball at Berg Middle School.

On Oct. 18, 1974, he married Charlotte A. Deal in Newton. He worked for Maytag Company for more than 31 years and retired in 2004. He recently worked as an intervention specialist at Newton Senior High School and worked part-time at Kellduff Gas Station. He enjoyed talking with and coaching students.

Mr. Witte was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, UAW 997, Newton Cardinal Booster Club and Kellogg Men's Club. He was a lifelong resident of Kellogg.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Billy Witte of Newton; a daughter, Angie Witte of West Des Moines; one granddaughter; his mother and step-father, Eleanor and Rollie McGinnis of Kellogg; a brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Deb Witte of Kellogg; a sister, Carolyn Witte of Newton; a niece and nephew; and many aunts, uncles, cousins friends and students.
