Richard Lee "Dick" Ward, 76, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Newton, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.

A memorial service will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Steve Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Des Moines Arts Center Print Club.

The son of Andrew Ward and Bessie Balmer, he was born Nov. 24, 1929, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in 1957.

On June 16, 1957, he married Kay Dossey in Des Moines. He worked for Maytag company for 38 years and was director of patents and intellectual property. Mr. Ward was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Des Moines Arts Center, where he was a charter member. He enjoyed antiques, the arts and making lists. He lived most of his life in Newton. After he retired, he moved to Florida.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Carol Ward of Houston, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Dwight Long of Warren, Ohio; four grandchildren; and five brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean and Betty Ward, Harold and Glennys Ward and Bill and Barbara Ward, all of Newton, and Jerry and Micky Ward of Cleveland, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Dorothy Harvey and Lucille Herbold.
