PELLA -- Martha A. Ward, 81, of Pella died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A private family prayer service is planned with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

No visitation is scheduled. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home or sent to Craig and Sara Smith, 909 S. Seventh Ave. W., Newton 50208.

The daughter of John and Nellie (Van Zee) Van Schevikhoven, she was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Pella. She graduated from Pella High School in 1942. She retired as a certified tax preparer and was a legal secretary for many years. She was co-founder of Iowa Association of Legal Secretaries and served as president from 1968 to 1970. She enjoyed playing bridge and sewing and needle work. She lived in Eldora and Iowa Falls, Branson, Mo., and in southern Iowa before moving back to Pella in 1999.

Martha A. Ward, Age: 81, of Pella, passed away June 14, 2006 at Hospice of Jasper County's Monarch Wing in Newton.

Martha was born on January 29, 1925, in Pella. Her parents were John and Nellie (Van Zee) Van Schevikhoven.

She was a graduate of Pella High School, 1942 and worked as a certified tax preparer and legal secretary for many years.

Martha was Co-founder of the Iowa Association of Legal Secretaries, which she served as President of from 1968-1970. She enjoyed playing bridge and sewing and needle work.

Martha lived in Eldora and Iowa Falls, Iowa, Branson Missouri and Southern Iowa before moving back to Pella in 1999.

Martha is survived by a son, Craig (Sara) Smith of Newton, 2 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Husband, Marvin Smith in 1999; Son, Michael in infancy, Sister Elizabeth Poorting in April 2006; and a Sister in infancy.

Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home or mailed to Craig and Sara smith, 909 S. 7th Ave W., Newton, Iowa 50208.
