Raymond R. "Ray" Stoner, 74, of Newton died Saturday, July 1, 2006, in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of William and Grace (Brown) Stoner, he was born July 11, 1931, in rural Prairie City. He served in the U.S. Army under General George Patton for three years at the 38th Parallel with the 31st Infantry in Inchon Harbor, Korea.

On July 14, 1956, he married Darlene (Swisher) Hagwood in Newton. He was a production worker for Maytag Company for more than 37 years and retired in 1992. He was a lifetime resident of Jasper County and lived in Newton since his return from World War II.

Mr. Stoner was a car show/restoration enthusiast, and he and some of his friends started the Mustang Club of Central Iowa in 1979. He was a member of the Eastern Iowa Mustang Club and the Shelby National Club. He traveled the U.S., going to car shows with his 1960s Ford Mustangs and Shelby Cobras. He won many trophies. The categories in which he won the most in "Best of Show" and "Most Authentic" at national competitions.

Survivors include a son, Martin "Dutch" Stoner of Rochester, Minn.; two daughters, Lisa Pendroy of Ankeny and Tammy Morton of Newton; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Darwin and Dorothy Stoner of Missouri and Michael McCoy of Newton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rosella (Stoner) Edgar of Cedar Rapids and Grace (McCoy) and Butch Braaksma of Gilman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Michael McCoy; a son, Raymond Gene Stoner; a brother, Creighton "Jack" Stoner; two sisters, Arlene Willoughby and Edith "Jo" Seufert; and a niece.
