Esther L. Stier, 87, of Newton died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at USA Healthcare -- Newton.

A funeral service was at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton today with the Rev. Eric Johnson officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. today at Greencastle Cemetery in rural Mingo.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Albert Everet and Hattie May (Osborne) Stier, she was born May 16, 1919, in Mingo. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, doing needlework and cooking. She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, living in Mingo, rural Newton and in Newton.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Betty DeShamp of Marshalltown and Peggy and Tommy Sanders of Reasnor; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and John Garret of Laurel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 10 brothers and a sister.
