KELLOGG -- Earl E. Stepp, 89, of Kellogg died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Lynn Eberhart of Grinnell United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials to Grinnell United Methodist Church or to the 4-H Foundation may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Fount M. and Hattie (Crockett) Stepp, he was born Feb. 27, 1917, in rural Kellogg. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1936. On Aug. 10, 1940, he married June Kendall. He was a farmer and horse and cattle breeder.

Mr. Stepp was a member of Grinnell United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau, former member of Kellogg Lions Club and Kellogg Saddle Club. He was a past 4-H leader, serving for more than 25 years, receiving a special recognition award and the National 4-H award. He helped develop the Jasper County Fair in Colfax, served on the building committee, extension council and as a director of the Jasper County Fair Association. He also served as director of Polled Hereford Association, past president of Jasper County Angus Association and director of Iowa Saddle Horse Association. He was a well-known cattle and horse judge. In 1987, he was inducted into the Horseman's Hall of Fame.

Mr. Stepp enjoyed farming, showing horses, traveling, cruising and watching little colts and calves play in the springtime.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Philip Stepp of Kellogg; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and James Lockard of Johnston; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Leatha Hesson and Roxie Noethe; and two brothers, Proctor Stepp and Bates Stepp.
