DEMING, N.M. -- Fern Smith, 83, of Deming, N.M., formerly of Marshalltown, died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at her home.

A funeral service will be today at 11 a.m. at Lane Chapel at Riverside Cemetery in Deming with the Rev. Greg Ellcey officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials will be accepted to Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Deming. Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home in Marshalltown is handling arrangements.

The daughter of John and Hattie Rambo, she was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Mingo. She worked in the Des Moines area for several years before moving to Marshalltown. On Sept. 10, 1976, she married Jacob A. Smith. Pursuing their love for golf and warm weather, the couple moved to Deming in the early 1980s. She was a long-time volunteer at the Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Deming and was active in church activities. She was an avid baseball fan.

Survivors include a step-daughter and son-in-law, Miriam Schmidt Follis of Baxter; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene Ward of Marshalltown; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Lorrene Ireland; and a brother, Ralph Rambo.
