Ray E. Schutte, 86, of Newton died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with his son, the Rev. Harold Schutte of Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa, officiating. Burial will be at Mount Zion Cemetery in rural Newton.
Friends may call Sunday from noon until 6 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of John and Adah (Woody) Schutte, he was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Spenser, S.D. He was a farmer and a member of Assembly of God Church. On Feb. 7, 1940, he married Freda Fenner in Killduff. He later married Grace Smith on March 15, 1974, in Newton. He lived more than 60 years on the same family farm. He enjoyed watching baseball and was a New York Yankees fan.

Survivors include his wife, Grace of Newton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Dianna Schutte of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Harold and Nan Schutte of Oskaloosa; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Olivia Smith of Bunceton, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Montgomery of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; an infant daughter, Shirley Ann; an infant granddaughter; a sister, Mabel Cessford; and one brother, Jim Schutte.
