William F. "Bill" Russell, 67, of Newton died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. David Rex, pastor of Metz Community Church, officiating. Private family burial will be at Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Friends may call from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in his name. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Boyce Russell and Myrtle Manning, he was born Oct. 12, 1938, in Newton. On Oct. 19, 1956, he married Ramona J. "Mona" Osborn in Newton. He was a farmer and worked in the tool and die department of Maytag Company for 24 years. He retired in 1999. He worked as a Newton fireman for five years, and also worked at Newton Seed Store, Newton Water Department and Wilding/Yeager Plumbing. He was a member of UAW Local 997, Jasper County Farm Bureau and Sully Co-op Exchange. He enjoyed farming, deer and pheasant hunting, camping, and celebrating Old Thresher's Day. He enjoyed old farm tractors.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Mike Bleakney of Newton; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Doug Russell of Lynnville, David and Rhonda Russell of Colfax and Dan and Joanie Russell of Kellogg; nine grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Morris D. and Carmen Russell of Surprise, Ariz., and Bill and Sandy Boyd of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Gerald Boyd; and a son, Dale.
