Lewis L. "Louie" Purvis, 49, of Newton died Saturday, May 20, 2006, at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Forrest and Ione Purvis, he was born June 20, 1956, in Newton. He worked at Maytag Company for 30 years and was an inspector. He retired in January. He was a U.A.W. Local 997 member. He enjoyed fishing, putting together models and spending time with his son. He also enjoyed collecting things, including World War II memorabilia, G.I. Joes and Matchbox cars.

He is survived by a son, Doug Purvis of Newton; his mother of Newton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Larry and Deena Purvis and Lyle Purvis, all of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
