Dr. Marvin Robert Moles, 77, of Newton died in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Tiare Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County, Newton First Presbyterian Church Foundation or Crosslake Presbyterian Church.

The son of Dr. John Irving Moles and Iva Evelyn Smith, he was born Oct. 19, 1928, in Central City. He attended schools in Central City, Palo and Afton and graduated from high school in Pocahontas in 1946. On July 4, 1956, he married Jane Susan Woodburn in Iowa City. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a medical officer from August 1954 to August 1956. He was affiliated with Newton Clinic from Aug. 6, 1956, to Jan. 31, 1995, and served patients at Jasper County Care Facility until it closed in 2000.

Dr. Moles was licensed to practice medicine in Iowa in July 1954. He was a member of the active medical staff of Skiff Medical Center from 1956 to 1995 and served on various committees and positions, including chief of medical staff. He was a member of Jasper County Medical Society, Iowa State Medical Society and American Medical Association. He also was a member of and active in Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, serving as president from 1980 to 1981. He was board certified in family practice from 1972 to 1991.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Crosslake Presbyterian Church and a former member of Newton Noon Kiwanis.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Jackie Moles of Newton and Donald Moles of Indianapolis, Ind.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane Moles of Newton and Debra and Doug Merfeld of Walford; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
