MONROE — Dale Norman McComas, 84, of Monroe died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe Presbyterian Church, with burial following at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

A visitation will be today from 2 to 8 p.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe, where the family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Monroe Presbyterian Church or the Monroe Emergency Unit.

The son of Lafay and Margaret (McDaniel) McComas, he was born May 16, 1922, in Marion County. He attended Monroe High School and graduated in 1939.

On April 13, 1943, he married Frances Van Zante in Unionville, Mo.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the 96th Infantry Dead Eye Division.

After coming home from the war, he spent the next 32 years working for PAG/Cargill Seed Co. After retiring from the seed company, he worked for Jim and Denny Gardner and their farming operation. He also spent time working for Van Zante Hardware. He enjoyed watching sports and especially enjoyed rooting for the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughters-in-law, Gary and Ellen McComas of Pleasant Hill; two daughters and a son-in-law, Deb and Larry Raber of Grimes and Donna Illingworth of Newton; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
