GRINNELL -- Wilma A. May, 89, of Grinnell died on Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at the Mayflower Homes Health Care Center in Grinnell.

A funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Rock Creek Cemetery near Grinnell.

Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will be present at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

The daughter of Cash and Myrtle (Deeds) Adkins, she was born June 15, 1916, near Grinnell. She was raised in the Rock Creek area, where she attended rural school and later attended Grinnell High School. On Feb. 16, 1935, she married Howard May in Newton. The couple lived in Kellogg and Davenport, before moving to a farm east of Gilman in 1947. She and her husband operated a grain and livestock farm. She resided at the Mayflower Homes in Grinnell for the past few years. She enjoyed outdoor activities, animals and fishing.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen Peterson of Aurora, Colo.; one son, Richard May of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ila Mintle and Wanda Kiesey, both of Grinnell, and Barbara Henderson of Lebanon, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Dale May; and a granddaughter.
