DES MOINES -- Janet L. Humes, 66, of Des Moines, formerly of Newton, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Taylor House in Des Moines.

A funeral service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with Elder David Lincoln officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will be available. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name.

The daughter of John D. and Pearl L. (Annis) Gearhart, she was born Sept. 27, 1939, in Iowa City. She attended Oak Academy in Nevada. On Dec. 22, 1956, she married Francis L. Humes in Marshalltown.

She worked for Winpower in Newton, Rolscreen in Pella and Casey's General Store in Newton. She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and enjoyed quilting, Scrabble and Nintendo. She lived in Sioux City, Ira, Galesburg, Knoxville and Newton.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, David L. and Tamara Humes of Reasnor and Thomas L. Humes (James Haberling) of Des Moines; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Dee Anna L. and Duane Welland of Fremont, Rhonda L. and Gary Knapp of Lovilia and Angela L. Robinson of Grinnell; a granddaughter who was raised by her grandparents, Crystal S. Playle; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, J. Darwin and Maryllis Gearhart of Colfax, James and Valerie Gearhart of Willow Springs, Mo., and Ronald and Margie Gearhart of Pocahontas, Ark.; five sisters and brothers-in-law, LaVerna and Lyman Cornelison of Ira, Patsy and Max Monahan of Nevada, Sarah and Bob Westerback of White House, Tenn., Sandra and Gregory Lee of Spring Hill, Tenn., and Jolene and Samuel Anderson of Cedar Hill, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Delbert Gearheart.
