Frank Herberger, 86, of Newton died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Park Centre Health Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in his name or First Baptist Church.

The son of Frank P. and Iva May (Craven) Herberger, he was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Newton. He attended Newton schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart.

On May 7, 1983, he married Helen (Folbert) Goodman in Newton. He worked for Maytag Company and retired from the rubber department in December 1973.

He enjoyed his dogs, fishing, eating at Midtown Cafe and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church, U.A.W. Local No. 997 Retiree Union, past member of Newton V.F.W. Post 1655.

He is survived by two step-sons, Terry Goodman of Costa Rica and Denny Goodman of Missouri; a sister, Hazel Herberger of St. Louis, Mo.,; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Walter Herberger; two sisters, Ethel Coch and Ina Davies; and two step-sons, Richard Goodman and Garth Goodman.
