MASON CITY — William "Bill" A. Anderson, 84, of Mason City, formerly of Newton and Grinnell, died Friday, July 21, 2006, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Clark and Areatha (Shill) Anderson, he was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Good Conduct Award.

On July 21, 1945, he married Alyce A. Newton in Montezuma. He was a tub welder in the factory at Maytag Company for 34 years and retired in May 1983. He was a member of VFW Post 1655, American Legion Post 111 and a former member of UAW Local 997. He enjoyed coaching little league and Babe Ruth baseball and going to and watching sprint car races. He lived in Grinnell from 1946 to 1950, Newton from 1951 to 1992, Grinnell from 1993 to 1997 and Mason City from 1998 until his death.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Andy and Kate Anderson and Larry and Joanne Anderson, all of Newton, and Richard Wayne and Janice Anderson of Grinnell; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Web and Bev Anderson and Edgar and Bev Anderson, all of Grinnell; a special friend, Josephine Brue of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a granddaughter; three brothers, Everett, Harold and Bob; and two sisters, Margaret and Lucille.
