WINTERSET — John De Nato, 92, of Newton died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at the Winterset Care Center South in Winterset.

A funeral service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

The family will greet friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials to First United Methodist Church in Newton or First United Methodist Church in Winterset may be left at the funeral home.

The son of John and Lena (Argenta) De Nato, he was born Feb. 9, 1914, in Rexfield. He was 16 when he started working in the coal mines of southern Iowa and built fighter planes in California before he went into the U.S. Army. He served during World War II and was part of the Normandy Invasion. On Dec. 24, 1952, he married June C. Coakley in Newton.

Mr. De Nato was a production worker at Maytag Company for 31 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1655 in Newton. He enjoyed camping and fishing. He lived in Newton from 1945 until moving to Winterset in 2003.

Survivors include five sisters and a brother-in-law, Zella Wolfkill of California, Isabella Chamberlain of Michigan, Lee Kauzlarich of Des Moines, Mary Fox of Illinois and Norma and Norman Rodgers of Winterset; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Merico De Nato of Marshalltown, Quinto De Nato of Burlington and Chuck and Kay De Nato of Cincinnati; a sister-in-law, Doris Maher of Mingo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters.
