Paul Gearhart

GRINNELL -- Funeral services for Paul Gearhart, 72, of Grinnell, a member of the Iowa Highway Patrol for more than 30 years, were held today, Feb. 5, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Raymond C. Lott, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in Palo Alto Cemetery south of Newton.

Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell was in charge of arrangements.

He died Thursday at a Centerville hospital.

As a state highway trooper Mr. Gearhart was assigned to Jasper County and, during the last 10 years before his retirement in 1976, to the license bureau in Newton.

Survivors are two sons, Kenneth of Dubuque and William P. of Conrad; a daughter, Elizabeth Baker of Centerville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Gearhart and Della Powers, both of Des Moines.

He was born June 11, 1917 at Brooklyn and, with his parents, moved to Adel in 1927. He was a 1937 graduate of Adel High School.

He was married to Ruth Batten Sept. 5, 1937.

They resided in Adel, Carlisle, Dallas-Center and Marengo and moved to Grinnell in 1951.

He served two terms on the Grinnell City Council and as major protem of Grinnell.

He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and the Grinnell Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Gearhart was an army veteran of World War II.
