MONROE -- Funeral services for Carl L. Fennema, 74, of Monroe, prominent businessman and community leader, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Monroe United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Jerry Mc Gee, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe.

Memorials to the Monroe United Methodist Church or the Monroe Kiwanis Club Playground Fund may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. Fennema, who owned and operated Fennema Grocery Store in Monroe from 1960 to 1979, when he retired, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Survivors are his wife, Jane; a daughter, Karla (Mrs. Dave) Talbot of Elmhurst, Ill.; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and four sisters.

Mr. Fennema, a veteran of World War II, was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, Monroe Community Club, was a founder and member of the Monroe Kiwanis Club, the Jasper County Historical Society, the Monroe Senior Citizens Planning Committee and was a former director of the Associated Grocers of Iowa.

He was active in Republican Party affairs.

The son of Chester and Jennie Kaldenberg Fennema, he was born Sept. 21, 1915 in Monroe and was a 1933 graduate of Monroe Community High School.

He was married to Jane Crumpacker Aug. 8, 1953 in Monroe.
