Jake Ettelson

Jake Ettelson of 324 W. 8th St. S., a longtime resident of Newton, died this morning, Sept. 25, at St. Augustine Hospital in Fresno, Calif.

Mr. Ettelson was on vacation at the home of his brother, Frank, who resides near Fresno.

Wallace-Pence Funeral Home is handling arrangements which have not been completed.

Funeral services for Jake A. Ettelson, 72, of 324 W. 8th St. S., a lifelong resident of Newton, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

Dr. Douglas Oelke, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Friday.

Public Masonic services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Visitation with the family will be held following Masonic services.

Memorials to the Shriners Cripple Childrens Hospitals or American Heart Association may be left at the funeral home.

He died Monday while on vacation in Fresno, Calif.

Survivors are his wife, Harlene; a son, David Paul of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Sandy (Mrs. Larry) Shaver of Newton; a grandson, four granddaughters, two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Mary (Mrs. Gomer) Thomas of Newton; two brothers, Frank of Sanger, Calif., and Lyle of Newton, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Harry, and two sisters, Maude Brennan and Marguerita Kirkman.

Mr. Ettelson was a member of the First Baptist Church, Newton Masonic Lodge 59 AF and AM, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Gebal chapter 12 of Royal Arch Masons, Malachi Council of Royal Arch Masons, Oriental Commandery 22 of Knights Templar of Iowa, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines, Nazareth White Shrine, and Des Moines Con____ AASR.

He also was a lifetime member of the Newton Veterans of Foreign War Post 1655, Newton American Legion Post 111, was past exalted ruler of the Newton BPO, Elks Lodge 1270, was a member of the Jokers and the United Auto Workers, Local 997, Retirees Union, and Izaak Walton League.

Mr. Ettelson, an Army Medical Corp veteran of World War II, had been an electrician at the Maytag Co., retiring in 1979.

The son of Jack and Lillie Reeves Ettelson, he was born Feb. 7, 1918 in Newton, was a 1936 graduate of Newton Community High School, a 1939 graduate of Capital City Commercial College and attended Drake University in Des Moines in 1959-1960.

He was married to Harlene Jones July 13, 1940, in Grant City, Mo.
