MINGO -- Graveside rites for Leland D. Eckardt, 68, of Box 2, Mingo, a resident of Jasper County since 1953, were held this morning, Jan. 2, at the Greenlawn Cemetery at Afton.

The Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan, pastor of the Mingo United Methodist Church, conducted services.

Visitation with the family was held Monday evening at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

Memorials to the Mingo American Legion or the Colfax Rescue League will be accepted.

He died Saturday morning at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines of congestive heart failure.

Survivors are his wife, Betty L.; four daughters, Mary Louise (Mrs. Cary) Mc Murray of Blacksburg, Va., Joyce Eckardt of Lakewood, Colo., Vicky (Mrs. Robert) Johnson of Magnolia, Texas, and Cindy (Mrs. Gary Argo of Belle Plaine; and six grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers, Vernie of Greenfield, Wayne of Fairfield and Joe of Oskaloosa; and a sister, Edna Caviness of Afton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Everett, Lloyd and Walter, and a sister, Erma.

Mr. Eckardt, a member of the Maytag Retirees Union, Local 997, and American Legion Post 534 of Mingo, was an Army veteran of World War II.

An inspector at the Maytag Co., Mr. Eckardt, who retired in 1983, was employed at the company for 25 years.

The son of Oscar Nicholas and Julia Endres Eckardt, he was born Oct. 2, 1921 in Adair County and attended Adair County schools.

He was married to Betty L. Bailey April 12, 1947 in Benton, Mo.
