Max E. Dodd, 74, of Tucson, Ariz., a resident of Newton from 1946 until 1978, died Friday afternoon, Sept. 28, at his home in Tucson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reese Chapel in Newton.

The Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the Congregational United Church of Christ, will conduct services.

Military rites will be held at Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell, Ga., later in the week.

Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to a fund in his name may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Mickey of Tucson, Ariz.; three sons, Terry of Roswell, Ga.; Michael of Marina Del Ray, Calif., and David of Lakeland, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Helen Patterson of Des Moines, Betty Woodrow of Edina, Minn., and Wanda Calhoon of Fort Dodge, and two brothers, Joe of Camdenton, Mo., and Don of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Lydia, and two brothers, Ivan and Chuck.

Mr. Dodd, who had been employed at Vernon Co. for 38 years was a member of the board of directors of the company. He retired in 1978 as vice president of sales.

Mr. Dodd, who was the first winner of a Des Moines Register scholarship, was a past member of the Presidents Council of the American Institute of Management, was the subject of a biographical record in “Who’s Who of Finance and Industry” and was the cover photograph and subject for the story, “How a Vet Won His Fight for Money," in the Salesman’s Opportunity Magazine.

Mr. Dodd, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, served in Iwo Jima, Guam, Okinawa and Guadacanal and had played trumpet in the U.S. Marine Band.

He was a member of the Third Marine Infantry Division Association, past member of the Newton Country Club board, was a member of Oro Valley Country Club of Tucson, Ariz., a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Veterans of Foreign Ward and American Legion, and was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge.

The son of George and Flossie Dodd, he was born Jan. 7, 1916 at Norwalk, was a 1933 graduate of Ottumwa High School and attended Parsons College in Fairfield.

He was married to Maxine Overturf Sept. 5, 1937 at Ottumwa.

Mr. Dodd was born in Norwalk, Ia., and lived in the Newton area until 1985. He was a retired vice president of sales for the Vernon Co. in Newton and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Tucson, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Mickey; three sons, Terry of Roswell, Ga., Michael of Marina Del Ray, Calif., and David of Lakeland, Fla.; three sisters; two brothers; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home.
