Sylvester Cooper
Sylvester “Bud” Cooper, 75, of 902 E. 13th St. N., a resident of Newton since 1940, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4, at Skiff Medical Center of cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.
The Rev. H. Eugene Cedarholm, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials to the Skiff Medical Center will be accepted.
Survivors are a son, Art; a daughter, Kay (Mrs. Tom) Millsap of Des Moines; three grandchildren; a brother, Floyd Cooper of Newton; and two sisters, Carrie (Mrs. Roy) Schermerhorn of Newton and Marylin (Mrs. James) Howrey of Rose Hill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marvel, Nov. 20, 1982, and two brothers.
Mr. Cooper, a machine operator at the Maytag Co. for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1977, was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1655, RSVP, United Auto Workers Local 997, Retirees Union and Jasper County Senior Citizens.
The son of Arthur and Anna Klobnak Cooper, he was born Aug. 6, 1915 in Wayne Township in Monroe County.
He was married to Marvel Lorraine Meade March 31, 1937 in Prairie City.
