Ezra C. Cooper
Ezra C. Cooper, 89, of Heritage Manor, formerly of 426 S. 4th Ave. W., a resident of Newton since 1927, died Sunday morning, Aug. 19, at the Manor of cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.
Elder Robert Gardner, pastor of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Elder Jon Hunt of Polk City will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials to the RLDS Church will be accepted.
Survivors are a daughter, Delores (Mrs. Leo) Versteegh of Newton; two grandchildren, Steve Oswalt of Des Moines and Stephanie (Mrs. Randy) Clement of Newton; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Gladys, March 3, 1986, five brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Cooper, who was ordained as an elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1959, served as Newton pastor for 12 years.
A factory worked at the Maytag Co. for more than 38 years, he retired in 1966. While at the Maytag Co. he helped establish the Maytag union in 1938, and during the following years served in several offices as well as serving on the executive board and negotiating committee. He also served as president of the Relief and Benefit Association at the Maytag Co.
The son of Dave and Catherine Mc Gee Cooper, he was born Jan 24, 1901 in Monroe County and attended Monroe County schools.
He was married to Gladys Angell June 30, 1929, in Albia.
