OBITUARY. - J. R. Newman was born in Wilson, Niagara County, New York, July 23rd, 1818, and died in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, April 19th, 1893, aged 74 years, 8 months and 26 days.

In 1844 he was married to Martha Derby who died, who died in March, 1863. To them were born six children, five of whom, four sons and one daughter are still living. On Oct. 20, 1864, he was married to Mrs. L. J. Derby who survives him. To them were born three children, two of who are living.

In the fall of 1853 he left New York and settled in Cambridge, Henry Co., Illinois, where he resided until the spring of 1879, when he moved to Butler Co., Nebraska, whre his family still resides. Three years ago he spent a year in Newton with his daughter, Mrs. J. E. Wing.

In the spring of 1870 he had a severe sun stroke from which he never fully recovered; his mind has been more or less impaired, and at times the impairment was very serious, rendering him an object of great solicitude to his friends. In December 1892, he came to make another visit with his daughter, Mrs. Wing, and while here , on the morning of April 19th, the weary brain gave way and he entered into rest. In 1863 he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he remained a member until his death. His hearing was so seriously affected by the sunstroke that he was never after able to take much satisfaction in any public gathering, now however his ears are opened to the melodies of Heaven, and his eyes have been permitted to see the Kind in His beauty, and to behold the land which was afar off. His funeral services were held from the residence of his daughter Mrs. J. E. wing in this city, the pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating. His body was laid to rest in Newton's beautiful city of the dead. E. C. B. ~ The Newton (Iowa) Journal, Wednesday, May 10, 1893.
