Harriet Lucille Bruce

Funeral services for Harriet Lucille Bruce, 88, of Newton, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Newton, officiating.

Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Family will be present Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m.

Memorials in Mrs. Bruce's name will be accepted.

Mrs. Bruce died of heart failure, Sunday, Oct. 12, at Skiff Medical Center.

The daughter of Charles and Alice Ewers Markley, she was born April 10, 1909, in Wayne County. She was a high school graduate and attended Simpson College for one year.

A longtime resident of Newton she was raised in Millerton. Mrs. Bruce was the retired owner and operator of Bruce Cleaners. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Lady Elks.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Beverly and John Daniel of Grinnell; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Leona McIntire of Nevada, Delores Abel of Ankeny and Cleo Gillman of Corydon.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 15, 1997.
