Viola E. "Vi" Yoder, 79, of Newton died Friday, March 17, 2006, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. David Smiley officiating. A private family burial will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials may be made in her name to First Baptist Church or Hospice of Jasper County. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the afternoon of the service.

The daughter of Orlando "Lando" and Verna Hershberger Gingerich, she was born March 19, 1926, in Kalona. She graduated from Kalona High School in 1943. On Sept. 12, 1947, she married Duane L. Yoder in Kalona and was a homemaker. She moved to Newton in 1966. She worked at Skiff Medical Center for 10 years in the insurance office and later in the front office. She also helped for several years at the Jasper County Farm Bureau Office when needed. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and enjoyed traveling to see family and friends. She and her husband spent several months during the winter in the early 1990s, working in Kentucky for the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP).

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Gary (Lori) Yoder and John Yoder, all of Newton; two daughters, Becky (John) Neff of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Kathy (Jim) Collins of Helena, Mont.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Junior (Gladys) Gingerich of Morris, Ill., and Richard (Rose) Gingerich of Greentop, Mo.; three sisters, Ella Maupin of Stone Mountain, Ga., Mary (Vernon) Kensinger of Kalona and Jeanette Hotz of Muskego, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Gingerich and Rosalee Gingerich, both of Goshen, Ind., and Maxine Gingerich of Johnson City, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lee; and three brothers, Roman, Marvin and Eli.
