Laurel B. "Chic" Wilson, 88, of Newton died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. David Rex of Metz Church in rural Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorials may be left in his name at the funeral home.

The son of Bert and Lydia Bigley Wilson, he was born May 4, 1917, in rural Reasnor. On Feb. 18, 1978, he married Edna McFarlane in Colfax. He worked for Cooper Manufacturing in Marshalltown and retired in 1985. He also ran a delivery service and raced cars at several Iowa tracks. He also enjoyed camping and woodworking.

He is survived by three sons, Larry Wilson of Newton, James (Jamie) Wilson of Marshalltown and Robert (Donna) Wilson of Mingo; a daughter, Karen (Bob) Bleakney of Newton; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a special friend and companion, Marian Sutphin of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a daughter, Judi Bushue; a great-granddaughter; two brothers; and three sisters.
