Dorothy Wilson, 88, of Newton died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Gardens in Des Moines.

Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, where the family will be available after 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or Park Centre Activity Fund.

The daughter of Tom Higginbothom and Maud Baker, she was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Howard, Kan. She graduated from high school in Tulsa, Okla. On April 12, 1942, she married Ray Wilson. She worked for Fawn Engineering in Des Moines and lived in Des Moines most of her life. She moved to Newton in 2003. She was a member of Riverbend Association in Des Moines and enjoyed crafts and sewing.

Local survivors include Karen and Bruce Showalter, Brian Showalter and Jacob Showalter, all of Newton. She also is survived by a step-great-great-grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Wanda Higginbothom; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Ned Bradley of Mead, Wash., Ruth Erwin of Vallejo, Calif., and June and Larry Solomon of Paradise, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a step-daughter, Betty Wilson; and a brother, Ray Higginbothom.
