David E. "Dutch" Versteegh, 47, of Newton died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at his home.

A funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Leo E. Versteegh and Doris E. Smith, he was born May 30, 1958, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1976 and was a production worker in the cabinet line for Maytag Company for 18 years. He was a member of UAW Local 997, First Lutheran Church and VFW Auxiliary. He enjoyed motorcycle and bicycle riding and hunting.

Survivors include his father and step-mother, Leo and Delores Versteegh of Newton; his fiancée and her daughters, Kim Crook, Tiffany Finch, Lindsey Finch and Katrina Finch, all of Newton; a step-sister, Stephanie (Bill) Conklin of Newton; a step-brother, Steve (Julie) Oswalt of Des Moines; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
