S. Herbert Vanderzyl, 88, of Newton died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at Careage of Newton.

No services or visitation are scheduled. His body has been cremated. Private family graveside services will be at a later date. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Memorials, if desired, may be made in his name to Jasper County Historical Museum and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Simon H. and Grace Van Gorp Vanderzyl, he was born July 17, 1917, in Pella. He graduated from Pella High School in 1935. On Dec. 25, 1940, he married Ruth D. Carlson in Oskaloosa. He was a resident of Newton since 1940. He was owner/operator of coal mines in Mahaska, Marion and Jasper counties. He grew up in the mining business and retired in 1966.

Mr. Vanderzyl is survived by his wife; three sons, Ralph C. Vanderzyl of Newton, Herbert L. "Lance" Vanderzyl of Yuma, Ariz., and Tom Vanderzyl of Knoxville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
