Harry L. Vance, 97, of Newton died Friday, March 17, 2006, at USA Healthcare in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Stephen Mathison-Bowie of First Presbyterian Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Memorials will be accepted to Senior Citizen's or First Presbyterian Church and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Bingham McCaslen and Isabell Carr Vance, he was born July 31, 1908, in Mahaska County. He lived most of his life in Newton and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1927. On Sept. 4, 1927, he married Aneta G. Gates in Newton. He was a supervisor of the S.W. Machine Shop for the Maytag Company for 43 years and retired in 1972. After retiring, he helped at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home for many years.

Mr. Vance was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 79 years, Newton Lodge No. 59 AF/AM, O.E.S. No. 100, RSVP, Jasper County Senior Citizens; Maytag Management Club, Newton B.P.O.E., Jasper County Historical Museum and Newton Alumni Association.

He is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann (Marvin) Munger of Newton; a grandson; and a brother, James (Rosemary) Vance of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a granddaughter; and four sisters, Gladys Nelson, Elsie Little, Gwen Tucker and Katie Oliver.
