William C. Swisher, 85, of Newton died Thursday, April 13, 2006, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. A.B. Sudbrock officiating.

Friends may call today after 4 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials in his name may be left at the funeral home.

The son of George and Inez (Burnham) Swisher, he was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Kellogg. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1939 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Dec. 31, 1945, he married Iva Eloise Alloway in Newton.

He worked as a metal finisher for Maytag Company for 30 years and retired in 1980. He was a member of American Legion and UAW Local 997. He also was a member of VFW, where he was a former post commander and held several state offices. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, driving around town, watching baseball and playing Yahtzee.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Cindy Swisher and Larry and Connie Lakin, all of Newton, and Glen Swisher of Colfax; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon Swisher and Laurie and Albert Sudbrock, all of Newton; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Genevieve "Jenny" McNew of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; a sister, Edythe Miller; and a brother, Virgil Swisher.
