Leona D. Sutton, 96, of Newton died Thursday, March 30, 2006, in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Greencastle Cemetery in rural Mingo.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in her name and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Ross and Emma Deeter Sutton, she was born May 14, 1909, in Ira. She worked as a telephone operator for Laurel Telephone Company for 25 years and retired in 1988. She was a member of Laurel Ladies, a Bible study group and Baxter Kitchen Band. She enjoyed crocheting and planting flowers, especially violets.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Cross of Newton; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Breer of Baxter; a sister-in-law, Wilma Sutton of Baxter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; two brothers, Leland Sutton and Marilyn Sutton; and a sister, Maude Huffaker.
