Jimmy Thomas Stevens, 70, of Newton died Saturday, March 4, 2006, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name to Iowa Caregivers Association.

The son of Bert Hamilton Stevens and Eunice Winton, he was born May 16, 1935, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1953. On June 1, 1956, he married Connie Renfro in Newton. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for Maytag Company and retired in 1983 from inspection. He enjoyed basketball, football, baseball, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and Newton Cardinals.

Survivors include his wife; his mother-in-law, Shirley Renfro of Colfax; sister-in-law, Diane Findley of Mitchellville; a niece, great-nephews, uncle and an aunt; and special friends, Cory (Kelli) Gilliland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, eight uncles and one aunt.
