Donald Ryder, 85, of Newton died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park.

The family will greet friends Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials to Newton Elks Club or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Tom and Fannie (Vernon) Ryder, he was born May 8, 1920, in Grand Haven, Mich. In 1938, he graduated from Newton Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945. On Feb. 9, 1951, he married Fern Ramsey in Burlington. He worked for Maytag Company in the service department for 37 years and retired in 1984. He was a member of Elks Club, Izaak Walton League and VFW Post 1655.

Mr. Ryder was a catcher on fastpitch softball teams in his younger years and also played golf. After retirement, he enjoyed many sports and spending time with friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Julie Ryder and Mark Bendixen of Fort Madison; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Jill Ryder of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Carol Ryder of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother, Harry.
