SANDWICH, Ill. — The Rev. Roy Arnold Nelson, 88, of Sandwich, Ill., formerly of Newton, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, in Sandwich.

A memorial service will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Newark Lutheran Church in Newark, Ill. His son-in-law, the Rev. Charles Sampson, will officiate. Burial at Helmar Lutheran Cemetery will precede the service. Gabel Dunn Funeral Homes Ltd. in Newark, Ill., is handling arrangements.

There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Newton, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orison, Ill., or Newark Lutheran Church in Newark.

The son of Peter and Hedvig Lindstrom Nelson, he was born Sept. 6, 1917, in Chicago, Ill. Following graduation from DePaul University, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On June 15, 1946, he married Norma Burklund in Chicago. He graduated from Augustana Seminary in 1950 and was then ordained at Washington, D.C., into the ministry of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served parishes in Ogema, Prentice and Westboro, Wis.; St. Paul in Orion, Ill., Trinity in Hollywood, Fla., and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newton.

Survivors include two sons, Stephen (Teddie) Nelson of Orlando, Fla., and Mark (Christina) Nelson of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Sharilyn (the Rev. Charles) Sampson of Newark, Ill.; six grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor (Jorgen) Ettestad of LaGrange, Ill.; and a brother-in-law, Mel (Ann) Burklund of Orland Park, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
