Clair Nelson Hindman, 81, of Newton died Thursday, March 16, 2006, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans II Section of Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

The son of Nelson Delano and Esther Veronica Hanna Hindman, he was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Brush, Colo. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was a soldier in 121st Regiment of the Eighth Infantry and served as a staff sergeant. He fought in the Aleutian Islands, American Theater and European Theater. He survived the Battle of the Bulge and was honored with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

On May 2, 1946, he married Angela T. Schmidt in Newton. He was a furniture salesman at Montgomery Ward in Newton for many years. He also worked in the factory of Maytag Company for more than 18 years and retired in 1983. He farmed for many years. He was a member of American Legion Post 111, Disabled American Veterans and VFW Post 1655. He served as the UAW union steward for the inspection department at Maytag for several years. During the 1960s, he coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Nick (Donna Steiniche) Hindman of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Scot (Maggie Solasberry) Hindman of Newton; three daughters, Shellie (Ed) Nall of Clinton, Utah, and Shannon (Jim) Bergman and Natalie (Jerry Jr.) Chandler, all of Newton; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry (Arlene) Hindman of Hubbard; and two sisters, Maxine (Sterling) Swanger and Peggy (Dale) Gardner, all of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jake; and two sisters, Marjorie and Betty Del in infancy.
