Alice V. Herbold, 87, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at Heritage Manor in Newton.

A funeral service will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Newton with the Rev. Howard Vrankin officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name or First Lutheran Church.

The daughter of John Franklin Masters and Myrtle Viola Christina Blankenberg, she was born May 21, 1918, in Chariton. She graduated from New Sharon High School in 1937.

On Feb. 2, 1946, she married Howard H. Herbold in Wathena, Kan. She worked as a sales clerk for Sears prior to the birth of her children. She was a member of First Lutheran Church Skiff Medical Center Auxiliary, RSVP, Jasper County Historical Society, Jasper County Senior Citizens and in the Third Armor Division Association with her husband. She enjoyed sewing, reading, crafts and traveling.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Hal Herbold of Des Moines; a daughter, Valli R. Herbold Childers of Columbia, Mo.; one grandson; and a sister, Francesca Cairo of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gladys Jordan; and a brother, Walter Masters.
