GRINNELL — Virginia Stanley Harrod, 84, of Grinnell died Monday, April 10, 2006, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Cheri Doane of Pella officiating. Burial will be at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Friday, and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Kellogg Historical Society or to the Newburg Congregational Church.

The daughter of Ray and Charlotte "Lottie" (Reynolds) Smith, she was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Newburg. She was raised in the Newburg area and graduated from Newburg High School. She also attended AIB in Des Moines and worked for the Meredith Corporation following her college graduation.

On Nov. 29, 1941, she married Laurence Stanley in Kirksville, Mo. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Newburg, Kellogg and Gilman areas prior to their retirement. Following the death of her husband, she married Robert Harrod of Blair, Okla. They divided their time between Iowa, Oklahoma and San Benito, Texas. She moved to Grinnell in 1998.

Mrs. Harrod enjoyed volunteering for the Newburg Congregational Church Ladies Aid, and she enjoyed quilting, dancing, raising flowers and her pet poodles.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Bryce Vander Werff of Kellogg; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lyle "Butch" and Karen Stanley of Houston, Texas, and Dennis and Sherri Stanley of Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Cooper of Grinnell; and her sister-in-law and her husband, Carol and Byron Brain of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and one brother, Luverne Smith.
