Mary Griffith, 100, of Newton died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Heritage Manor in Newton.

A funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey, associate pastor of Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Community of Christ Church in Newton.

The daughter of George Mellick and Anna Zezak, she was born July 24, 1905, in Lost Creek in Mahaska County. She graduated from Albia High School. On Jan. 28, 1926, she married John E. Griffith in Indianola. She was a registered nurse at Skiff Medical Center for more than 31 years and retired in 1970. She was a member of Community of Christ Church in Newton and enjoyed gardening, flowers and canning.

She is survived by a daughter, Marian L. Griffith of Newton; a sister, Edna Dooley of Wilton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a daughter, Evelyn; two brothers, John and George Mellick; and nine sisters, Ann Greenhut, Katherine Hughes, Leona Dahlin, Margaret Mataya, Emma Mellick, Helen Johnson, Agnes Jefferies, Matilda Johnson and Francis Kerr.
