Jimmy J. "Jim" Erickson, 62, of Newton died Saturday, March 18, 2006, at Careage of Newton.

A funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Newton with the Rev. Howard Vrankin officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call Thursday after 5 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Ernest R. and Ruth R. Rux Erickson, he was born Jan. 21, 1944, in Thief River Falls, Minn. His family moved to Newton in 1949, and he graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1961. He was a loan officer and vice president of Jasper County Savings Bank/Hawkeye Bank/ U.S. Bank, working there for 35 years. He retired in 2002. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Izaak Walton League, Elks and Westwood Golf Course.

Survivors include his fiancée, Virginia Lester of Newton; his fiancée's children, Debbie (Clark) Hassig, Sherrie (Bill) Cobbs, Dwaine Lester and Nikki (Casey) Sliger, all of Newton; 10 grandchildren; his mother of Newton; two brothers, Jerry (Miya) Erickson of California and Jan (Rayleen) Erickson of Princeton; two sisters, Jacqueline (Bill) Cody of West Union and Janice Mudd of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother-in-law, Dale Mudd.
