Donald A. Cobbs, 79, of Newton died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to American Heart Association, Izaak Walton League or Newton Masonic Temple and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of William J. and Lillian (Cobb) Cobbs, he was born Feb. 28, 1927, in Lovilia. He graduated from Newton Senior High School and was a resident of Newton for 75 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and on Oct. 7, 1949, he married Rose Mary Durbala in Newton. He was an inspector for Maytag Company for 38 years and retired in 1987.

Mr. Cobbs was a member of Newton Masonic Lodge No. 59, VFW, Izaak Walton League and Newton Christian Church Disciples of Christ. He was a Boy Scout leader for boys from the county home. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert A. and Pam Cobbs of Cresco and Michael S. Cobbs of Newton; two daughters, Teresa M. and Paul Klein of Newton and Bernice A. and Duane Springer of Runnells; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Max, Robert and William Cobbs; and a daughter, Donna A. Reynolds.
