Janet R. Cook, 88, of Newton died Friday, March 24, 2006, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the church the morning of the service or at the funeral home.

The daughter of Howard E. and Dena M. (Roberts) Roberts, she was born March 7, 1918, in Monroe. She graduated from Monroe High School and received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Drake University. On June 19, 1939, she married Leland L. Cook in Monroe. She taught at Aurora Heights and later at Emerson Hough Elementary schools. She retired in 1982.

Mrs. Cook was a member of First United Methodist Church, M.E. Chapter of PEO, and Retired Teacher's Association. She enjoyed having luncheons with her family and friends and was part of several bridge groups. She was a resident of Newton since 1951.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Thomas H. "Tom" (Janie) Cook of Missoula, Mont.; a daughter, Virginia Bennett of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, E. James "Jim" Bennett; and a sister, Jean Wilson.
